An interactive 3D exploration game set within a mysterious pyramid and its surrounding landscape, where sound serves as the primary tool for navigating the environment and locating hidden objects.

Project overview

StillPoint focuses on spatial awareness, environmental sound, and the relationship between movement and perception. When stationary, players experience a clear and detailed soundscape, allowing them to identify nearby elements through their position and distance. As the player begins moving, the audio gradually becomes distorted through modulation and signal processing, with more aggressive effects introduced while sprinting.

This mechanic encourages players to slow down, listen carefully, and rely on their hearing to locate objects and progress through three distinct levels.

Outcome and impact

This project has been an opportunity to explore how audio can function as a central gameplay mechanic rather than simply an atmospheric element. By introducing movement-dependent distortion, I wanted to create an experience that challenges the player's spatial awareness and encourages deliberate listening.

More about the experience

I began developing this project as an experiment in interactive audio, using Three.js to create a custom 3D environment built around spatial sound and audio-driven gameplay. With the assistance of locally hosted AI models, Claude, and OpenAI Codex, I directed the development of the environment and its underlying systems, gaining a greater understanding of interactive game design throughout the process.

One of the biggest challenges was the iterative nature of developing a 3D environment through code. To streamline the workflow, I directed the creation of temporary real-time editors for terrain, rivers, sky, and lighting. These tools allowed me to preview changes instantly and export settings directly into the project, effectively creating a lightweight collection of game-engine tools tailored to my needs.

The audio design required careful consideration of spatial positioning, environmental ambience, and dynamic signal processing. By combining these systems with movement-dependent audio distortion, I wanted to create an experience where listening becomes essential to gameplay. The project has allowed me to explore the relationship between technical implementation, sound design, and player interaction.
