Cinematic game trailer sound redesign
Sound designer · Dialogue editor · Audio engineer · Composer · Mixing engineer · Audio post-production
An unofficial sound redesign of an Apex Legends cinematic trailer, featuring original sound effects, dialogue restoration, and a complete audio post-production workflow.
Game audio reelProject overview
The fast-paced nature of Apex Legends presented an exciting opportunity to explore cinematic sound design across a wide variety of environments, characters, and action sequences. With constant movement, rapid transitions, and dynamic combat, my objective was to create a punchy and immersive soundscape that complemented the visuals while maintaining clarity and consistency throughout. The redesign emphasizes detailed sound effects, layered textures, and precise synchronization to enhance the impact of each moment.

Outcome and impact
This project allowed me to explore the creative and technical demands of cinematic game audio, particularly the relationship between sound, movement, and visual storytelling. By focusing on detailed layering, dynamic processing, and precise synchronization, I was able to create a cohesive redesign that emphasizes the energy and impact of the original trailer while establishing its own sonic identity.
More about the experience
I approached the redesign in Pro Tools, building a multitrack session with dedicated sound effects, Foley, ambience, and dialogue elements. Much of the sound design involved layering and processing assets from Soundly and my personal library, using automation, filtering, modulation, and dynamic processing to create movement, depth, and impact. To preserve the original character performances, I used the Demucs fine-tuned model to isolate the dialogue, followed by careful restoration using iZotope RX and DX Revive.
One of the largest challenges was finding music that complemented the trailer's existing pacing and visual edits. After analyzing the original music and experimenting with several royalty-free alternatives, I composed and produced an original track specifically around the visuals, including recorded vocals and a layered hook. However, I ultimately decided that a sound-design-focused presentation better served the purpose of the project, allowing the individual effects and environmental details to stand on their own.
The experience reinforced the importance of creative flexibility and knowing when to simplify an arrangement. Removing the music shifted the focus toward the sound effects themselves, making their timing, dynamics, and spatial characteristics even more important. Overall, the project was an opportunity to refine my audio post-production workflow and develop a more deliberate approach to cinematic sound design.
