"Tiger Mom" follows Kevin, a high school senior stuck in a strained, mutually-misunderstood relationship with his Asian immigrant mother. Initially caught between his feelings of obligation to her and his own desire for independence, he ultimately decides to rebel and sneak out after his love interest invites him to a party. However, his night of rebellion doesn't pan out the way he hoped.
Project Overview
Tiger Mom was such an exciting undertaking for me and my interests in audio. It provides such a poignant look at the complexities between cultural traditions and modern aspirations. My contribution was to help bridge these layers of emotion and intensity, amplifying the audience’s engagement and understanding of the characters’ struggles and triumphs. From the dialogue, to the sound effects and ambience, I had to infuse my perspective as an audience member, so that I could further capture the essence of the story and its characters. The basis of my workflow was through trial & error. Bounce an iteration, test it on my home theater or headphones, repeat. Not too different than dealing with music, but benefits far greater from the subtle decision-making between elements of dialogue and the bed underneath it.

My roles for this short film were a portion of the great work done by the cast and crew, but pivotal in shaping the atmosphere and landscape of the film. My awareness of the control I had to manipulate all sound elements allowed me to integrate technical skills with creativity, contributing to the director’s vision. Munara and editor Justine Garcia were structured yet adaptable, and an overall delight to work with. It was really important for me to get everything just right, and I'm pleased with how everything turned out.
